Our current best selling cloth diapers by far are one size pocket diapers. The vast majority of cloth diaper parents right now buy one size pocket diapers.
A one size pocket diaper adjusts to fit a baby from about 10 lbs through potty training, for most children. They're easy to use, keep your baby feeling dry, and you can customize the absorbency for nap time or night time. We have package deals on most of the one size pocket diapers we carry (watch for the "view quantity discounts" button), plus get free shipping on orders over $75!
How does a one size pocket diaper work?
In most brands, you adjust the size by snapping down the front of the diaper to make it shorter.
All the one size pocket diapers we carry come with two inserts included, a smaller one for use with the smallest setting of the diaper, and a larger one for the larger settings. As a bonus, the two inserts can both be used together when your child needs extra absorbency.
One size pocket diapers are a wonderful invention. So, how do you choose whether to buy one size pocket diapers or pocket diapers that come in small, medium, and large? The answer involves how many children you want to use the diapers for. A one size pocket diaper is pretty much "used up" or worn out after one child (approximately 3 years of constant use, washing every other day, is being washed over 500 times!). So if you're only planning one child, or this is likely your last child, then one size pocket diapers are a perfect choice. If, however, you want to use the same diapers on multiple children, then I recommend getting perfect size (small, medium, large) pocket diapers. They're simpler to use, and while it costs more up front to buy the different sizes, you'll come out even in the long run. Whether you choose one size or sized pocket diapers, you still come out way ahead of what you would spend on disposable diapers! If you decide to primarily use perfect size diapers, it's not a bad thing to try a few one size pocket diapers. They are perfect for a child that is in between sizes or can't get a good fit in any size, such as a particular tall and thin child, or a particularly short and chubby one. If you have more than one child in diapers, these can be a lifesaver in the diaper bag, able to be used on whichever child needs extra changes. And some of them, like Blueberry Minky one size pockets, will be your favorite diapers so you'll be thrilled that they grow with your child!
Once you've decided you want to use one size pocket diapers on your baby, how do you choose which brand?
Each brand fits a little bit differently, so you may not know which one will be your favorite until you're able to try them on your baby. For this reason, you may want to buy one or two of several different brands that interest you, and see for yourself what works best on your child. Here are some general comments to help you decide where to start:
- Our current best seller is the Fuzzi Bunz one size pocket diaper. Because it adjusts in the elastic instead of snapping down the front, you can adjust it to fit any shape of baby. Since it's not as quick to adjust, though, if you have two kids in diapers and want to be able to use the diapers on either one, this wouldn't be the easiest.
- The bumGenius one size pocket diaper is on the small end compared to other one size pocket diapers. This means you will have better luck with this one size pocket diaper fitting well when your baby is newborn, but if you have a larger toddler, they might grow out of this diaper before they potty train.
- Since the Knickernappies one size pocket diaper has side snaps (as opposed to either velcro or snaps on the front of the diaper), parents find they get a smoother fit on a child with a chubby tummy. You can also snap the diaper on a looser setting and toddlers can pull it up and down themselves like underwear, for potty training. If you're looking for the one size pocket diaper that will fit the longest, choose either Knickernappies or Fuzzi Bunz. Both still fit my 40 pound 5-year-old.
- The Happy Heiny's one size pocket diaper is great for kids on the chubbier end of the spectrum. Newborn babies, or those with skinny legs, don't have great luck with this one. But if you're looking for a one size pocket diaper to fit around chubster thighs without leaving red marks, Happy Heiny's is perfect.
- The Blueberry one size pocket diapers are my personal favorite. They fit both my kids beautifully (one child was chunky, one more petite). In addition to the great fit, another special thing about Blueberry one size pocket diapers is their inserts. All of the one size pocket diapers mentioned previously above come with microfiber inserts. All Blueberry one size pocket diapers come with a small bamboo and organic cotton insert, plus a larger microfiber and hemp combination insert. These premium inserts will get most kids through the night, with a minimum of bulk. Either the minky snaps or the minky velcro versions of the Blueberry one size pocket diaper give you just that extra bit of fun, fashion, and coziness. You're going to change a lot of diapers. You may as well make it a little bit fun!
